Three glasses of Bere Czell
Bere Czell · Brașov 1893

The house beer

The beer we pour is Czell: Brașov's beer since 1893, lost in 1948 and brought back to life in 2022.

At Aftăr Stube, the house beer is Bere Czell. It is not a new brand but a Brașov story of more than 130 years: a family of entrepreneurs, a brewery at Dârste, a lost recipe and two brothers who found it.

    1816 – 1891

    A family of entrepreneurs

Friedrich Thomas Czell was born in Brașov in 1816, the son of a wool textile producer. From wool workshops he went on to distilleries, a small brewery on Strada Lungă, the sugar factory at Bod and the coal mine at Vulcan. In 1891 the family also bought Brașov's first brewery, founded in 1857, which became the heart of the Czell brewery.

  2. Old Bere Czell bottles and an enamel Bere Czell sign

    1892 – 1893

    The birth of Bere Czell

In September 1892 work began on the brewery at Dârste, on the road to Predeal. On 15 October 1893 the first bottle of Bere Czell left the brewery gates. The Czell beer hall opened next to it, with a brass band every Sunday: 30 kreuzers bought entry and three glasses of beer.

  3. Brașov in 1938, seen from above

    1948 – 1995

    The break

In 1948 the Czell family was deported from Romania and all their property was confiscated. The Dârste brewery was nationalised and renamed Aurora, and later Ciucaș. The Czell name disappeared from the bottles for more than 70 years.

    #GustulPierdut, the lost taste

Lóránd Tóth, a horticulture student, found a laboratory certificate from around 1900 in an archive, holding the original Czell recipe, and brewed it again, trial after trial. His brother, Edömér Tóth, collected old Czell bottles, tokens, labels and advertisements. In 2022, with brewmaster Simonffy Árpád, they restarted production: on 22 February the first crate of Bere Czell since the 1940s was bottled, and Czell Originală 1893 follows the historic recipe.

    Home, on Council Square

In January 2026 Brauhaus Czell opened on Council Square (Piața Sfatului), in a production hall from 1924 on the way to Palatul Czell. February brought Czell Beer Museum, with the Tóth brothers' whole collection, and the nano-brewery run by Simonffy Árpád.
